What are the advantages of using teeth implants?

Implants are artificial roots made of titanium, perfect replacements for missing teeth. The most popular types today are the cylindrical or screw forms. It’s made of pure titanium, and its surface is specially modeled.

  • When only one or two teeth are missing it’s not necessary to chisel healthy teeth to create a bridge
  • When molars have to be replaced a bridge has to be created which is more comfortable and easier to manage than removable replacements.
  • In the event of tooth loss it is possible to make dentures with only a few implants which don’t move during chewing or speaking. Depending on the state of the jawbone, teeth can be supplemented with either bridge or a few implants. It helps prevent the unavoidable bone resorption.
  • By offering comfort and security during speech and chewing it helps maintain a social life.

How is the implant inserted?

Installing implants requires a lot care and attention from both dentist and technician. First the doctor needs to inquire about the patient’s general health, and medication. This is followed by an in-depth dental inspection, an x-ray is conducted in every case, in certain instances a 3D CT scan is also added. A local anesthetic is applied before the surgery. After incising the mucous membrane sufficient space must be created by the jaw to insert the artificial roots. After this is complete the wound is stitched back together. The covered up implant takes about 4-6 months to heal, during this time it calcifies. During the recovery period temporary fillings can be worn, after the surgery minor swelling of the face can occur but significant pain shouldn’t be present. After it has healed another small incision is made into the gums to free the implants and a gum forming screw is inserted. After a brief period, imprints are taken and the dentures are created based on them. The dentures are then inserted by the dentist.

Who is eligible for implants?

Any patient who is in good health, has good oral hygiene and sufficient bone density. During the initial examination the doctor informs the patient about the treatment and surgical procedures as well as the denture plan.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of the procedure depends on the number of implants as well as the level of bone growth needed. In an ideal situation, with only 1 tooth, it can be done within a half an hour even.

Will I remain toothless after implants?

If the implants are in the frontal area of the mouth, in the smile zone, the dentist will install a temporary set of teeth or bridge so you don’t remain toothless.

What materials are implants made of?

Only non-toxic materials are placed into the body, ones which tissue reacts to well such as the titanium which the implants are made of. Hip replacements are also made of titanium. Dental implants are either cylindrical or screw shaped.

Make sure to ice the area which was operated on to reduce swelling. Don’t eat anything while the local anesthetic is still in effect. For the next couple of days avoid consuming coffee, tea, alcohol, smoking and don’t eat spicy foods. Pay lots of attention to your oral hygiene and brush your teeth properly, including the wound area, also rinse with antibacterial mouth wash according your dentist’s instructions. Take the medicine prescribed to you. In case of pain, take pain relievers. The stiches will be removed after 7-12 days.

When is bone grafting necessary?

Bone grafting is necessary, if the bone is thin and is therefore insufficient to hold the fillings. This happens most often when patients put off getting implants for too long. Bone grafting can be necessary for traditional bridges as well, especially if an aesthetically appealing crown can not be made due to lack of supporting tissue.

When is the use of a membrane recommended?

Most of the time during the recovery period the bone grafted area much be covered, this can be achieved with a membrane.

How do we take care of our implants?

We take care of our implants just like we do our natural teeth; by brushing and flossing them 2x a day. It’s important to brush and floss daily. It’s also important to have regular checkups.

What do we mean by face lift?

This is a bone grafting procedure, after lifting the mouth’s mucous membrane the bone grafting material is inserted. Bone grafting procedures aren’t dangerous, but depending on the amount of bone which needs to be supplemented the procedure time and recovery period can be longer. This determines when the implants can be installed.
